Use products that do not contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or that contain very low amounts of these compounds.
Avoid using aerosol products or equipment such as paint sprayers whenever possible. Look for and use water based products, such as water-based paints.

| | I love free things, bargains too. | | Have you ever used Freecycle? It is a Yahoo group and they are all over the country. People who have things they want to get rid of post them on the newsgroup and people who want the items email the person getting rid of it. If it is a good match, the item is picked up by the person who wants it. All for free.And people who want an item post their want on the newsgroup and people who have that item and want to get rid if it email them to arrange pick-up of the item.I've gotten rid of all kinds of things I didn't want any more. It is amazing what some people want. I've given away egg cartons, cd's that come in the mail[like aol trial disks], plastic grocery bags, aluminum cans, empty inkjet cartridges, even two non-working dehumidifiers! It is great when you are cleaning out the basement or the garage. Last week I gave away thirty-some 3.5 inch floppy disks. None of our machines use them anymore.Sometimes there are things wanted by teachers or crafters that would otherwise just be thrown away. I hate to throw anything away if someone can use it. Floods happen - beside rivers, on the coast, in deserts, along city streets and behind protective levees. But you can take steps before the flood to protect your home and family from disaster. Some things can and should be done immediately. Others require a licensed professional. However, each change you make will increase your home’s resistance to flood damage.
When there is risk of flood:
Clear drains, gutters and downspouts of debris and make sure your yard’s grading (slope) directs water away from the building.
Anchor fuel tanks. An unanchored tank can be torn free by floodwaters, and the broken supply line can cause contamination, or if outdoors, can be swept downstream and damage other homes.
Buy and install sump pumps with backup power where needed. Regularly check to make sure they are working.
Cut off electrical service at the main breaker if the electrical system and outlets will be under water.
If you have time to hire a licensed electrician:
Raise electric components (switches, sockets, circuit breakers and wiring) at least 12” above the projected flood elevation.

| | Good Luck with that | | Well in the wake of Fay it is next to impossible to get a dehumidifier in Jacksonville FL! I have to have one! We discovered mold in the Sunroom (my studio!) and need to get the moisture out of that room. Well we ended up having to order 2 small ones from walmart.com and have them delivered to the house between thursday and monday.
